An EMI power line filter works by inserting a network of inductors and capacitors between your equipment and the mains supply, creating a low-impedance path that redirects unwanted high-frequency noise to earth while allowing the clean 50Hz supply to pass through unaffected. The inductors block rapid current fluctuations, while the capacitors shunt any remaining high-frequency energy away from the load. Together, these components attenuate both common mode noise (interference travelling in the same direction on multiple conductors) and differential mode noise (interference travelling between live and neutral), stopping it from either radiating outward or being conducted back into the supply network, where it could disrupt other connected equipment.

These terms are often used interchangeably, but strictly speaking they describe the same product from two different angles. EMC (Electromagnetic Compatibility) is the broader regulatory requirement: the standard your equipment must meet to operate safely alongside other devices without causing or suffering interference. EMI (Electromagnetic Interference) is the specific problem, unwanted electrical noise, that stops equipment meeting that requirement. An "EMI filter" and an "EMC filter" are typically the same physical device: a filter installed to suppress EMI so that your equipment achieves EMC compliance. In practice, if a supplier lists both terms, you don't need to choose between them, as the product itself is the same; the naming simply reflects whether the focus is on the noise being suppressed (EMI) or the compliance outcome being achieved (EMC).
