What is a Thyristor Power Controller?

A Thyristor Power Controller (also known as an SCR Power Controller) is a solid-state electrical device used to precisely regulate electrical power delivered to resistive or inductive loads. By utilizing advanced switching methods, these controllers provide highly efficient thermal and industrial process management.

How Do SCR Power Controllers Work?

Thyristor controllers regulate electrical output by switching AC voltage on and off at high speeds. They primarily utilize two control methods:

  • Phase Angle Control: Varies the conduction angle of the AC sine wave to provide continuous, smooth power adjustment. Ideal for inductive loads and fast-responding heating elements.

  • Burst Fire Control (Zero-Cross): Switches full AC cycles on and off in packets. This method minimizes Radio Frequency Interference (RFI) and is best suited for standard resistive heating elements.

SPECIFY WITH CONFIDENCE

Choose for the load.
Not just the current.

A thyristor power controller regulates electrical power in response to a signal from your temperature controller or PLC. The right specification depends on how the heater behaves, as well as the power it needs.

01.

Supply & heater rating

Voltage, phase arrangement, operating current and heater power.
02.

Load behaviour

Heater material, cold-start current and any transformer connection.
03.

Control & communications

Required feedback, firing method, number of zones and PLC connection.
04.

Installation conditions

Cabinet temperature, cooling, space and electrical protection.
UNDERSTAND THE OPTIONS
Match the firing method to your heater
There isn’t one firing method for every load. The heater and the process determine the appropriate approach.
Burst firing
Delivers groups of complete AC cycles and is commonly used for suitable resistive heating loads. Cycle timing should suit the heater and the process.
Phase angle control
Varies conduction within each AC half-cycle. It can suit loads requiring controlled start-up or current limiting. Power factor and harmonics also need consideration.
POWER CONTROL IN PRACTICE
Built around your heating process
Support for machine builders and manufacturers across demanding electric heating applications.
Furnaces & kilns
Heat treatment, ceramics and high-temperature processes.
Plastics & polymers
Extrusion, moulding and thermoforming equipment.
Ovens & dryers
Industrial heating, drying and food-processing systems.
Infrared & curing
Heater control for coating and curing processes.
Glass processing
Power control for specialist heating loads.
Environmental chambers
Thermal testing and temperature-cycling equipment.

YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED
Before you specify
Need advice about your particular load? Our UK team can help.

A power controller regulates electrical power to the heater. A temperature controller compares a sensor reading with the setpoint and determines the heating output required. These functions often sit in separate devices, although some systems combine them.

Often, but it is not always a direct substitution. Supply, load, control signal, cooling and protection must be checked. Solid-state controllers do not provide mechanical isolation; suitable isolation and independent protective measures remain necessary.

Better control may reduce overshoot, unnecessary heating or production waste where these are present. Coordinated multizone control may reduce simultaneous demand. Savings depend on the process, existing system and tariff, switching technology alone does not guarantee lower energy consumption.

Start with your supply voltage, heater power or current, load type and control signal. For a replacement, send the model code and a photograph of the rating label. A drawing or heater specification is also useful.
